WVGP's Historical Gazetteer is a work in progress. When it is complete, you will be able to search for geographical information by: Year, County, U.S.G.S. Quadrangle, Place Name, and Feature Type. It will contain linked database and GIS components. Today, only the GIS part is operational, and the Place Name feature has yet to be added.
The current GIS section contains four parts:
- Features: All of the data from the boundary descriptions found in more than eight hundred Jefferson County land grants. The information is separated into the following layers (viewable individually or in combination): Elevation, Boundary Marker, Soil, Structure, Transportation, Tree, and Water. Additional data will be added as other deeds are incorporated.
- Property Boundaries and Features: Outlines of all the original land grants in Jefferson County, separated into annual layers.
- Modern: The county outline plus modern water, road, and railroad features. Turn these on or off as needed to provide context.
- JCHLC Historic Building Survey: Data gathered in the Historic Building Survey conducted by the Jefferson County Historic Landmarks Commission (1995 to present). These layers show historic features that still survive today.
