Men who wore the name of John were prominent in the early history and development of California. This article includes a section on Mrs. Mary Day Brown, "John's widow," who removed to California in 1864 and settled at Red Bluff. There, in 1865 , Schuyler Colfax, Speaker of the House of Representatives, stopped on his tour of the Pacific Coast to visit with her. [Abstract by Boyd B. Stutler.]
